Apartment with a Japanese Spa
In this project, we decided to use as a reference the interiors of a ryokan, a type of traditional Japanese inn designed for a secluded stay of a small number of guests. The customers, a married couple, devoted connoisseurs of Japanese culture, have lived in Japan and other countries for many years. The interior had to be comfortable for living in Russian conditions and not similar to the gaudy interiors of chain Japanese cuisine restaurants.
The highlight of the project is the bathroom in the master bedroom, which can be called a full-fledged spa complex. To recreate the atmosphere of an onsen, the designer placed wooden bath stools for a real Japanese-style shower and a large wooden tub, lined inside with traditional Towada stone tiles.
This project embodies a lot of Japanese elements, but the interior is not overloaded with them. The entire apartment is done in muted tones, without flashy colors, with dim interior lighting, because the light and layering of shadows are closely related to the aesthetic concept of sabi.
