Apartment for Three Teenagers
The clients have a Scandinavian parenting style and believe that children should be encouraged to strive for freedom and independence. They asked us to design an apartment for their three middle-school sons – the apartment is located next to the parents’ one.
All three boys are passionate about technology and welding, so they spend a lot of time assembling different equipment. It is not the cleanest of hobbies, and the architect suggested dividing the space into two zones. There is a garage-like workshop adjacent to the entrance area, with plenty of storage space and a huge table at which all three can gather.
A small hallway leads to the living room and kitchen, from which three bedrooms can be accessed. To avoid causing fights between the children, all bedrooms are designed in the same style. The only thing that distinguishes them is a decorative panel above the bed, made in accordance with the personal wishes of each child. At first, bright colors and many playful decorations were used, and then, when the project was almost ready, it was decided to radically change the direction and focus on adult, calm combinations of textures and shades. Thus, the interior of the apartment does not adapt to the age of the children but sets a direction for their aesthetic development.
